Longtime Superior businessman Byron Lurye died Thursday. He was 98.

Lurye was the owner of Builder's Supply Co. of Superior for 47 years and was a partner in Edward's Realty in Superior for 84 years. He was the second generation of the real estate business, following his father, Edward, who founded the business in 1927, and followed by his son, Bruce, the current president.

Bruce Lurye said his father remained active in the business until four years ago. "He was a good man," Bruce Lurye said of his father. "People liked him. He was a good businessman."

Builder's Supply closed in 1985, Bruce Lurye said, and the family has focused its attention on the real estate business since then.

Another well-known Superior business, Lurye Furniture, is operated by a different branch of the family, he said.

Byron Lurye graduated from Superior Central High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served briefly during World War II, when he was 32. He served at various times as president of the Police and Fire Commission of Superior and Temple Beth El of Superior, and was a member of several civic organizations.
